Here is a blog of some of last year's events by the 119 South Band's Jeff Lane
6/30/05      Well, here it is, the end of June!  That means the year's half-over.  But just like summer, things are starting to heat up for the 119 South Band.  On Saturday, July 2nd, we will participate in the City of Charleston's "We Love Our Country" celebration.  This makes our second year in a row playing for their Fourth of July activities.  We will be opening up for country music superstar and Grand Old Opry member, Terri Clark!  This is our second tme opening for the Female Vocalist f the Year nominee.  The festivities get underway at 7:00 p.m. with the Aifr Force Band "Max Impact," followed by General Robert "Doc" Foglesong, a Mingo County native and special friend to the 119 South Band.  Then the 119 South Band plays at 8:00 p.m. followed by Terri Clark at 9:15 p.m.  It promises to be a special night.  Please come and join us at Harris Riverfront Park in downtown Charleston!

6/23/05      Summer is here and The 119 South Band is heading into a busy summer schedule.  This weekend was a busy one for the band, for sure.  On Saturday, we played at the Thornhill Superstore at Chapmanville, WV for 96.1 The Wolf's Million Dollar Giveaway.  It was really exciting as one (un?) lucky fan came within one digit of winning a million dollars!  Still, they gave away 40 prizes including a brand new pick-up truck, a four-wheeler, Kenny Chesney tickets and several ticket packages for the Firecracker 400!  It was a great show and a good crowd that really responded to the band.  The staff from 96.1 The Wolf really seemed to enjoy the band and everyone had a good time. We appreciated the opportunity to work with them.  Look for us to return to the Thornhill Superstore for their "Hands-On Marathon" on September 17th!

On Saturday evening, we played a wedding reception in the Harts Creek area for the Bryant Family.  We had a few guest singers with the band including Roger Bryant, and the "Hounddog" himself, Glen Adkins!  The band enjoyed this one as well and those in attendance stayed on the dance floor the entire time the band played.  Some people might not realize that we are available to do weddings and parties.  If you're interested, then give us a call.

6/9/05    The 119 South Band is pleased to announce that we will again be a part of the 2005 Massey Energy Summer Outing to be held in Logan, WV. Among the artists performing that day will be Ronnie Milsap, Randy Travis, the Temptaions, and the Four Tops.

The 119 South Band will play a 90 minute set beginning at 6:30 p.m. to be followed immediately by the Temptations! More than 40,000 people are expected to attend this event.

5/28/05      We sure had a lot of fun at WQBE's Rabbit Jam, but we sure had a lot of rain, too. In fact, The 119 South Band was washed out of playing during the sixth song of their set. Still, until the rains came down, the fans were cheering us on and seemed to be really enjoying theirselves. We played Mustang Sally, Running Out Of Reasons, Friend, Don't Take Her (She's All I've Got), Hole In The Pocket, Behind Closed Doors and One Perfect Love.

Just as we were finishing the last song, the winds increased and lightning struck close enough to make the crew temporarily shut down the event. Because it took so long for the equipment to dry out and for the crew to put back up the stage, The 119 South Band didn't get to continue their performance. We were disappointed, but WQBE told us to make plans to be in Charleston for their Fourth of July Celebration again this year! On July 2nd, we will open for Terri Clark in Downtown Charleston on the Riverfront! There will also be a fireworks presentation that night as well.  We can't wait!

4/9/05    The 119 South Band has been invited to play at WQBE's RABBIT JAM to be held Saturday, May 28th in South Charleston, WV at Oaks Field. Advance tickets are on sale now for $25. Tickets at the gate are $35. This great country show includes Jo Dee Messina, Darryll Worley, Tracy Lawrence and Josh Turner! The 119 South Band will play at 4:15 p.m. We sincerely hope that all of our fans will join us and support the band in this great showcase. For more information, check out the official site at WQBE.com.

3/15/05      The 119 South Band is finally completing work on their second CD, "Covers." This CD will feature some of the band's favorite songs that they perform in their shows. Included on this CD will be "Hole In The Pocket," "Sad Looking Moon," "Margaritaville," "Looking For Love," "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," "Peaceful Easy Feeling," "Fire On The Mountain," "Suspicious Minds," "Old Time Rock & Roll," and several others. The band is planning a CD Release Party at the Coalfield Jamboree when it is released. Watch for details here soon!

2/1/05    Recently The 119 South Band participated in the WV Fairs and Festivals Convention, which was held at the Charleston Civic Center on January 14th and 15th. The 119 South Band had a booth at the convention and were picked to Showcase on Friday, January 14th at 1:40 p.m. Here's the report from Jeff Lane:

"We had a great time at the convention! As far as the showcase went, first Country Music Star John Berry (Your Love Amazes Me) opened up the showcase. Then the Fairs and Festival Queens were brought onstage as they were in a competition to determine the State Champion! Then The 119 South Band came onto the stage.

We were the first band to showcase and the sound company wasn't quite prepared for what we were ready to deliver. At first, most of the sound came from the monitors we were listening to on the stage. We later found out that the main speakers hadn't been turned on yet! It took them to our third song to get the power flowing out front. Of course, this was all out of our control, as we were given only a line check to make sure that our mics and instruments were connected to the board.

Having said all that let me tell you about our performance. The band was dressed all in black ala Johnny Cash! Robbie looked good in his white Stetson and new black jacket. Steve and Dave were out front on the guitars with me and Stevie to either side of Mackie's drums.

When the curtain opened, the band kicked into "Running out of Reasons." To say we were ready for this was an understatement. We were given only twenty minutes to show off our band, and we had it timed perfectly. Coming straight out of our opener, Robbie launched into the old Johnny Paychek classic "Friend, Don't Take Her (She's All I Got)."

You could see the crowd gathering interest as the band played. As we finished "Friend", Robbie introduced us as The 119 South Band from Logan, West Virginia. Then he asked if there were any fans of "solid gold country" in the audience. We didn't hear much of a reply, maybe a whoop or two, but Robbie said "We're gonna sing one for you anyway!" and we launched into "Behind Closed Doors."

Well, that song must've hit home with the crowd because when we finished, there was a thunderous ovation. Of course, this got the band fired up. Robbie thanked everyone and then introduced the next song. It was a new original song, written by Robbie, called "One Perfect Love." If you haven't heard it yet, it is an upbeat song about finding your true love. There's only one, donchano! While we were playing this song, the Fairs and Festival queens were beginning to line up backstage to our left and right behind the curtains. The fans out front couldn't see them, but it was like they were standing right next to us. Well, they started getting into the music, laughing, dancing and even trying out a few choreographed dance routines. This made us pretty happy, as they seemed to be enjoying themselves. Sometimes it's hard for the band to tell how the crowd is doing, because you can't see much father than a few feet from the stage. Everything in the house looks dark. But these girls were having fun. Did I mention how cute they were? I mean, come on! These are the Fairs and Festival queens!

We finished the new song and, again, got some respectable applause. Robbie addressed the audience again, saying that the next song talked about how hard it to make that paycheck last as long as you need it to. He said that it seemed like he had a "Hole In The Pocket" of his jeans and the money just fell on through. This was our cue to play "Hole In The Pocket." Steve kicks the intro off on his guitar and then the piano comes in like a Jerry Lee Lewis song. When the whole band kicks in, you can almost feel the stage move!

I call this song an old honky-tonk song. It's one of those where you just can't sit back on your heels for long. Well, needless to say, the crowd was clapping and the queens were jitterbugging just out of sight behind the curtains. They were screaming at us and having even more of a fun time than they had done before. Let me tell you that it is easy to play when you have fans like that! This song has a couple of moments where we do "stops." The whole band hits the note together, really punching it. Everyone we could see was clapping, yelling, dancing or singing along. When we finished, you could really hear everyone clapping and cheering.

We knew our time was growing short and we had saved one of our favorite songs for last. Robbie thanked the crowd again, introduced the band one last time and invited everyone back to our booth. Then we started playing the Brooks and Dunn hit "Red Dirt Road." This song features organ and guitar to start off. Dave has a great lead part in it. We like it because we feel like we grew up on that red dirt road. And even though we arr called The 119 South Band, we have all driven "Rural Route 3" at one time or another. Again, the crowd responded to the song and as we finished, they gave us a great amount of applause. We felt like we had done the best that we could have done, given the circumstances with the sound problems. It's hard to let everyone get the feel of what you are as a band in less than twenty minutes. We didn't get to play any Rock & Roll Oldies, Southern Rock or Country Rock. But we gave them New Country, Classic Country and one of our original recordings.

We spent the rest of that day and all of Saturday at our booth, meeting the people who came by and giving out information about our band, how to book us and just talking about everything from their favorite types of music to where they were from. It was a good experience for us, one that we hope to be able to participate in again very soon. We are now taking bookings from many of the fairs and festivals that contacted us and we'll be letting you know more about them later.
